Pistols other than Ruger or Patriot.

Alan Westlake (Westlake Engineering) does gun conversions as you may have already seen on the Ruger page. It normally takes 3 months from ordering to collection. Many guns are capable of being converted. Some colleagues at the club have converted Remingtons or Rogers and Spencers. As  long as it has a solid frame (i.e. not open top like a Colt) then it should be OK. You could have your revolver rebarrelled in .357, a cylinder made with .357 diameter chambers and shoot wadcutters if you wish, just like in the old days with .38 special! See Alan's website for more details and options westlakeengineering.com

Alan is extremely helpful and informative, and the parts are well made.

3 members at the club have guns from Falcon Gun Company. These are also well made and reliable. The Ian Wiggins cylinder conversion has the advantage that it can be loaded without removing the cylinder from the frame.

Over 150 conversions have been sold by Ian Wiggins.

STILL! Waiting for photos of Nick's pistol.

Photos of a Remington belonging to Ken Johnson. This is indeed the work of Ian Wiggins on the cylinder (identified by Ian), however the screw retaining pin on the cylinder is not his work, nor are the barrel and rammer that have been added to the pistol.

Photos are by Ken Johnson of his converted Remington.

Richard Kershaw converts Remingtons, Colts, Rugers, etc, so they may be shot with shotshell primer ignition and either BP or Nitro ignition. See the Ruger page for an example of his work and contact details. There was also an article in Target Sports by Derek Landers which reviewed his work. I have copies of the article, but am afraid of reproducing them here.

Rob Matt has a Bob Dunkley nitro cellulose cylinder to suit a Pietta 1858 Remington .44 revolver, he bought the nitro cylinder because at that time he wasn't allowed to shoot black powder at his club. He wrote: "Something else you may be interested in, I designed and made a powder dispenser that simultaneously charges 6 Remington chambers with 2.5 grains of Vihtavuori nitro. The charge could possibly be varied by making one new component, but my Remington was fine with this load. The dispenser fits onto a press that inserts and loads 6 off .451 balls in one go, speeding up the reloading process considerably. I used it originally with semi wad cutters, but I found I grouped better with good old fashioned ball. I will take a picture of the kit and send it to you, as it may be useful to your club. I am attaching a CAD drawing I made for now. I made it because I only have the use of my right arm, so I could shoot competitions like Bow Street Runners and stay inside the reloading time limits. I also thought it would help to prevent the range being tied up a little. Wouldn't like to think of the hours I spent making it."

The first shows the powder dispenser separated from the press,
the second shows them together. The dispenser was separable
so the powder could be stored safely.

The second shows them together as they would be for reloading.

The third is a view from behind and shows the primer remover
in better detail.

"The idea was to load powder and ball/bullet behind the firing line in one op, then the cylinder was carried forward to the firing point where the primers were loaded prior to firing. The system seemed to work quite well. It would be suitable for all club members (Provided the same powder and charge was agreed upon) as this what I designed it for. As I said it was designed around my Remington revolver with a Dunkley cylinder (They are manufactured by R&D in USA by the way). It would only need a slight mod for it to be suitable for the Westlake cylinder. Loading of powder and ball takes about 15 seconds with the machine." (The CAD drawing and photos were all provided by Rob Matt.)

That's pretty clever stuff, it looks a good solid job. My thanks to Rob for that information. The press is for sale for £50.
